Life on Planet TikTok

Remember the days of watching funny videos and trending challenges? Maybe you were a Vine fan (R.I.P), a YouTube addict, or an Instagram scroller. But let’s not forget the app that started it all—Musical.ly. Launched in August 2014 and later merging into TikTok in 2018, it helped spark the digital media revolution we know and love/hate today.

TikTok may have started as a dancing and lip-syncing app (and let’s be honest, it still is), but it has evolved into so much more. it has completely changed how we experience daily life—fast forward to now, and the world looks a whole lot different. Before TikTok only people with access to editing software could easily create cool videos and become content creators, however, now anyone can easily grow their social media with the power of their cell phone and specifically TikTok.

TikTok isn’t just a time-killer, it’s a career maker. Over 224,000 Americans now earn a living through the app, doing everything from influencing and running small businesses to believe it or not, getting paid to eat on camera (yes, mukbangers are a thing). Gone are the days of clawing your way up the corporate ladder—now, a single viral video can launch you from total obscurity to influencer superstardom.

Take Addison Rae, who went from posting dance videos in her bedroom to starring in Netflix movies. Or Alix Earle, who started with simple GRWM (Get Ready with Me) videos and is now one of the biggest influencers, landing deals with major brands like Amazon and Airbnb. Everyday people are turning their hobbies into six-figure careers, proving that all you really need is a phone, creativity, and a bit of support from your fans.

And it’s not just influencers cashing in, small businesses are thriving, too. TikTok turned from a dancing app to my favorite store. The hashtag #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt is living proof that one well-placed post can turn a small brand into an overnight sensation.

On another note, let’s all forget that Netflix feature that chose what to watch for you (does it even still exist?) TikTok is now the trendsetter. From unknown movies and TV shows to songs from decades ago are topping the charts again thanks to viral challenges (Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams comeback, anyone?). Unknown musicians like Olivia Rodrigo have skyrocketed to fame and dominating streaming platforms. Just ask the creators of Wednesday, whose dance scene inspired a viral trend that had millions recreating Jenna Ortega’s moves. If you’re an artist, comedian, or content creator, TikTok is your stage, and the algorithm is your biggest talent scout.

TikTok isn’t just an app—it’s a cultural revolution. It’s a career launcher, an entertainment hub, a trend factory, and an educational powerhouse all rolled into one. Whether the government tries to take it away or not, it is a part of us now and it is here to stay.
